Tour of the week ·

A Saturday in Hannam-dong

Hannam-dong is where I take most of my gallery tours: three international galleries within a ten-minute walk of each other, and Leeum to close the afternoon. Here is the order I recommend, and why.

Start around two in the afternoon: the galleries are quiet, and you reach Leeum before the last entry. Wear shoes you can walk in, the streets climb.

Look first. Read the label after.

  1. Stop 1

    Pace Gallery Seoul

    Hannam-dong

Begin here. The rooftop space is small enough to see in twenty minutes and sets the tone for the afternoon.

Tue to Sat, 10:00 to 18:00. Free.

  2. Stop 2

    Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul

    Hannam-dong

Two minutes downhill. The gallery shows European post-war and contemporary artists; ask at the desk for the exhibition sheet, it is well written.

Tue to Sat, 10:00 to 18:00. Free.

  3. Stop 3

    Lehmann Maupin Seoul

    Hannam-dong

A short walk along the main road. One artist at a time, hung with a lot of air: take your time in front of each work.

Tue to Sat, 10:00 to 18:00. Free.

  4. Stop 4

    Leeum Museum of Art

    Hannam-dong

End the afternoon here. Book the time slot in advance on the museum site, then keep the permanent collection for last: the celadon and the moon jars are the reason to come back.

Tue to Sun, 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:00. Booking required.
